Profile

My family often wonders how I became so passionate about the ocean, given that my home state of Iowa is better known for cornfields than coastlines. Growing up far from the ocean, my exposure to marine ecosystems came mostly through documentaries and visits to local lakes where visibility was, at best, nonexistent. Still, I fell in love with marine environments, and that curiosity eventually led me to San Diego, where I started SCUBA diving at 18 and was instantly hooked. I became an SSI Divemaster that same year and an instructor at 19, and I’ve been teaching ever since.  I’ve loved helping others experience the underwater world for the first time and understand why it’s so important to protect it.

After spending several years diving in the colder waters off San Diego, I wanted to explore warmer environments and learn more about different marine ecosystems. While studying Environmental and Ocean Sciences at the University of San Diego, I had the opportunity to study abroad with the School for Field Studies at the Center for Marine Resource Studies. My time there made a lasting impression on me, and I quickly fell in love with the island and its community.

I’m really excited to return to the Center as staff, continue diving, and share my passion for the ocean while contributing to conservation and research. When I’m not in the water, you can find me playing beach volleyball, working out, or practicing my line dancing skills!
